Things to Consider

Before you decide on which GPU you should buy, there are a few factors you should take into consideration. This is important because there are many GPU’s that will work well with ultrawide 1440p monitors, but which is best for you will depend on your individual needs.

  • The type of games you play – The types of games you play really influences the graphics card you need. E-sports games like CSGO don’t require a particularly powerful graphics card, even if you have an ultrawide 1440p monitor. However, AAA games like Battlefield 1 require a fairly powerful GPU. This is particularly true for ultrawide 1440p monitors when there are more pixels the card needs to deal with. For each card in our list, I have included the FPS you are likely to expect on a 3440 x 1440 monitor for some popular games.
  • Your monitor’s refresh rate – Another factor to consider is your monitors refresh rate. If you’re monitor has a high refresh rate (around 100hz), you might want to consider investing in a better graphics card to get the most out of your monitor. It’s no good having a 100hz monitor if you’re GPU can only manage 30 FPS! If your monitor is around 100hz, as long as you can get around 80 FPS, in my opinion that is pretty good.
  • G-Sync & FreeSync – If your monitor has Nvidia’s G-Sync or AMD’s FreeSync, you may want to get a corresponding GPU. FreeSync is only compatible with AMD graphics cards and G-Sync is only compatible with Nvidia graphics cards.

The Best GPUs for Ultrawide 1440p (3440×1440)

Below you can find our list of the best GPUs for ultrawide 1440p monitors. These vary quite a lot in terms of power and price. This is because the best graphics card for you will depend on other factors as well as your monitor. We have ordered the GPUs in our list from budget-friendly to best performance.

1. Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060

$244.00 – Buy on Amazon

The GTX 1060 is a lower end GPU for gaming on a 1440p ultrawide monitor. I would only really recommend this card if you primarily play low demand games like CSGO. It will have no problem playing low demand games on a 1440p ultrawide monitor, but for AAA games it will struggle. For example, you can expect only 30 – 40 FPS in The Witcher 3. Some well optimised games will run reasonably well (e.g. you should get around 70 FPS in GTA if you turn the settings down), however I would definitely recommend a more powerful GPU if you play a lot of AAA games and you have a monitor with a high refresh rate. The video below is a great demonstration on how the GTX 1060 performs on a 1440p ultrawide monitor (Although there is also 1080p ultrawide gameplay in the video too so be careful you don’t mix them up).

2. AMD Radeon RX 480

$239.99 – Buy on Amazon

You can expect the RX 480 to perform very similar to the GTX 1060. Great for low demand games on a 1440p ultrawide monitor but not so good for AAA gaming. The RX 480 is a great budget GPU for a 1440p ultrawide monitor if you’re monitor has FreeSync.

3. Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070

$255.00 – Buy on Amazon

If you’re looking for a more powerful GPU than the GTX 1060, the GTX 1070 is a great option for gaming on a 1440p ultrawide monitor. If you primarily play AAA games, the GTX 1070 is the minimum card I would recommend. You should get a consistent 60 FPS even in the most demanding games if you turn down the settings. You might get above 60 FPS in some games, but if you have a monitor with a high refresh rate, I would recommend a more powerful graphics card to get the most out of your monitor.

4. AMD Radeon RX Vega 56

Price not available – Buy on Amazon

The RX Vega 56 will have a similar performance to the GTX 1070. It’s good for 60hz 1440p ultrawide monitors but I would go for something more powerful if you have a high refresh rate monitor. The RX Vega 56 is a good option if you have a monitor with AMD’s FreeSync.

5. Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080

$465.10 – Buy on Amazon

If you have a 1440p ultrawide monitor with a high refresh rate, the GTX 1080 is a great option if you don’t mind turning the settings down. If you have a 60hz 1440p ultrawide monitor, the GTX 1080 is a great card for playing on high/ultra settings. Most AAA games will be run at around 60 FPS on ultra settings (except some of the most demanding games). If you turn the settings down, many AAA games will get closer to 100 FPS which is perfect if you have a high refresh rate monitor.

6. AMD Radeon RX Vega 64

Price not available – Buy on Amazon

The RX Vega 64 performs similarly to the GTX 1080. It’s a good card for playing AAA games at ultra settings on a 60hz 1440p ultrawide monitor, and a good choice for high refresh rate monitors if you turn the settings down. The RX Vega 64 is compatible with FreeSync monitors.

7. Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 Ti

$280.10 – Buy on Amazon

For 1440p ultrawide high refresh rate (around 100hz) monitors, the GTX 1080 Ti is the best card if you can afford it. If you have a 60hz monitor, the GTX 1080 ti is a little bit overkill and you will probably be better off with the GTX 1080 instead. Even the 1080 Ti will struggle to run the most demanding games over 60 FPS, however, many AAA games will run at around 100 FPS even on high and ultra settings. Below you can see some Far Cry 5 gameplay of a GTX 1080 Ti running on a 1440p ultrawide monitor.
