If you have a mid-range to high-end build, you’re likely going to have to decide between two of the most popular types of monitor: 1080p resolution with a 144z refresh rate or 1440p resolution with a 60hz refresh rate. In this guide, we will run you through the things you need to consider when choosing between them and then offer some recommendations for both types of monitor.

As a general rule of thumb, 1080p 144hz monitors are best suited for fast-paced and competitive games (think online first-person-shooter games like CSGO) due to the high refresh rate. 1440p 60hz monitors are best suited for slower-paced, immersive games (think RPG games like The Witcher 3) due to the higher resolution. However there are some other things you need to take into consideration which we will cover in this guide.

Things to Consider

  • Types of Games You Play – Assuming you will be gaming on this monitor, the types of games you play is the most important factor to consider. 1080p 144hz monitors are best suited for fast-paced and competitive gaming – usually online first-person-shooter games. If you will be playing a lot of CSGO or Battlefield etc. you should deffintely go for a 1080p 144hz monitor. Although the picture won’t look quite as detailed as a 1440p montitor, the higher refresh rate will provide a much smoother experience. On the other hand, if you play slower paced and immersive games – usually RPGs like The Witcher 3 – I would recommend a 1440p 60hz monitor. Because you don’t need to make sudden movements in these kinds of games, a higher refresh rate won’t have too much of a difference. The higher resolution is definitely worth it in this case.
  • Screen Size – You also need to take into account the size of the monitor. Larger monitors will require a higher resolution if you want to keep a good pixel density (how sharp the picture looks). As a general rule of thumb, 1080p is best suited for 24″ monitors and 1440p is best suited for 27″ monitors. If you want a really sharp image, a 1440p monitor will look great at 24″ or 25″, but I wouldn’t recommend 1080p on a 27″ monitor in most cases because it will look quite pixelated. The exception to this is if you will be sitting quite far away from the monitor.
  • Your Hardware – You should also consider your hardware when choosing between 1080p 144hz and 1440p 60hz. You want to make sure your computer can get the most out of the monitor. It’s no good having a 144hz monitor if you can only get around 50 – 60 FPS. You might as well just get a 60hz monitor and save yourself some money. Game Debate is a great website that can help you determine what your hardware is capable of at different resolutions. Don’t worry if you’re computer can’t reach the full potential of the monitor. For example, if you can get 90 FPS, a 144hz monitor will make a significant difference.
  • Budget – Finally you need to consider your budget. Generally speaking, 1440p 60hz monitors are quite a bit more expensive than 1080p 144hz monitors. If you’re looking for a budget 1440p 60hz monitor, the Dell UltraSharp U2515H is a great option.

Best 1080p 144hz Monitors

1080p 144hz monitors are excellent for fast-paced and competitive gaming. We’ve picked out the best options below. We recommend choosing a monitor with a TN panel for this category. TN panels don’t look as good as IPS panels, but they offer a faster response time which is ideal for fast-paced gaming.

Best 1440p 60hz Monitors

Below you can find some of the best 1440p 60hz monitors. These are great if you want a more immersive experience with slower paced games. We would recommend an IPS panel for a monitor in this category. IPS panels have a much better picture quality than TN panels. They also have a slower response time, but for slower paced games, this will not be very noticeable.
